Everton Red Triangle’s Tom Wilson claimed the National CYP 48kgs title in Portsmouth on Saturday with a textbook display of controlled aggression.
Some of the finest talent in the country was on show and Wilson got the action underway against the rangy Rocky Wadhams.
Both fighters looked for openings in the firstminute before Wilson stepped close and fired
home two hard right hands to wobble his opponent and bring a standing eight count from the referee.
An early finish looked on the cards but Wilson took his time to finish the first with a 4-0 lead.
Round 2 saw Wilson turn up the heat as he trapped his man in the corners impressing both the crowd and the judges with some lightning combinations to head and body. Round 3 brought no respite for Wadhams as he again found himself trapped on the ropes shipping shots from all angles but he hung in bravely to hear the final bell.
The judges verdict of 18 points to 4 for Wilson delighted his fans and coaches.
Coach Michael Stevenson commented, ‘This is a great achievement for Tom and the result of a lot of hard work. We’re very proud of him. That’s 18 wins out of 18 bouts for the club since the season started 4 weeks ago plus a National Title. It’s a great start to the season for us.’
